Chatting Tips

Skout Wing Gal – Keeping it real.

This week’s question comes from a user in the UK, Edward who writes:

Dear Skout Wing Gal,

I don’t know what’s wrong with me, I have met some great girls on Skout and I’ve started to a chat with them, either by saying hi or with a wink bomb, they respond initially and then they just stop. I continue to try and engage them but I get no response. I don’t think I’ve offended them but I just don’t know why no one wants to chat with me. Am I that boring? Please help!

Edward, unliked in the UK

Dear Edward,

Don’t fret, as long as we can assume you aren’t doing anything offensive, and you have a normal picture taken outside your bathroom (see my post on photos here) it might just be your approach. It’s awkward when you meet someone for the first time, even online, so here’s a few tips to help get you over the initial break point and onto the nitty gritty of getting to know each other.

First, let’s chat, no pun intended, a moment about what you say after your initial contact…what do you say? “Hay babe watcha doin?” Or maybe, “Yo honey u sur r fine?”

Because if you say something even close to those I promise you that approach won’t work. First of all, even though it’s chat let’s try not to completely butcher the written word. Spelling still goes a long way in a lot of girls books so rack up some easy points by actually writing something coherent.

Second, don’t say something generic, trust me it’s boring. Take the time to look at her profile or picture at least, and comment on something that is relevant to her. Does her picture have a dog in it? Is she wearing a jersey from a sports team? Why don’t you ask her about that….”Hey, nice jersey, are you a SF Giants fan or just a Buster fan?”

Girls really do like to feel special, so play into that instead of just going the generic route. Who knows, maybe you’ll discover you have loads in common and it’ll be a little slice of heaven from then on.

Spring has Sprung

Skout Wing Gal – Keeping it real.

Hey guys, and girls, I thought I would share an email I recently got from a fellow Skouter. Ms. S wrote:

Dear Skout Wing Gal

I’ve been chatting with a fellow Skouter for a while and we’ve decided to meet in person. I’m super excited but there’s one problem, we started talking about where to meet and that’s when we ran into trouble. He joked we could meet at an Internet café, I LOLed…I said a public place would be good and now we’re kinda stuck. Where would you suggest we meet for the first time? I don’t just want to go to a bar because I think we really have something and I want the first time we meet to be special.

Well Ms. S you pose an interesting quandary, and not only whether there are Internet café’s left or not. Meeting in person, for the first time, can be exciting and nerve wracking all at once. I like your thought process of meeting in public. Not to be a nervous Nellie, but I always suggest the first time you meet someone should be somewhere public, and let your friends know where you are going, just to be on the safe side.

Now the where, spring is finally here so why not head outside! Pretend to be tourists in your own town and go to a museum or landmark. You can take pictures and post them to buzz!

Not feeling touristy, try something on the healthy side, a bike tour or yoga class. Afterwards you can grab a cup of coffee and get to know each other even better laughing about your balance in the poses or the funky bike path.

The Art of the Self Portrait – or Get Out of the Bathroom

Skout Wing Gal – Keeping it real.

Spring has sprung, which gets me thinking about the outdoors, which in turn leads me to wonder why so many people are taking pictures of themselves in their bathroom mirror. Don’t you notice how the pictures turn out? Here’s the deal; the setting is uninspired, the lighting is terrible and you look just plain ridiculous. Think Mark Wahlberg’s character in Boogie Nights at his lowest point, talking to himself in the mirror.

Here’s an idea, why not ask a friend to snap of picture of you by your car? Or, if you have agoraphobia have them take a picture of you on the couch, or with your pet. Pictures are the first introduction new people have to you, so give them a reason to want to chat. A great trick is to pretend you are a tourist in your own town. Ask a passerby to snap a picture of you in front of a landmark, this is a great conversation starter because it gives someone an easy excuse to chat with you. If you live in San Francisco you could take a picture with the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, that way someone could use it as a reason to break the ice: “Hey, I’ve never walked across the bridge, want to go for a walk?”

Honestly unless you are in one of the 15 most beautiful hotel bathrooms and you are taking a picture of yourself in front of the incredible view there is no reason to take a picture in your bathroom, period. Just look at Bear’s picture, do you think anyone is intrigued by it?

Well ok maybe, but he’s a bear, taking a picture of himself, and that is a little out of the ordinary.

Opening Lines – Or Why No One is Responding To You

Skout Wing Gal – Keeping it real.

Have you ever seen a guy whistle at a girl walking by on the street? Have you maybe even tried it yourself? We’ve all at least witnessed it happen, whether we experienced it first hand or not. Now think back to the last time you saw it …did the woman stop in her tracks, turn around and say, “Wow, that was so clever. Here’s my number, please call me!” Sure that happens, never.

Look, in case you’re still confused let me spell it out for you; it doesn’t work in person and it doesn’t work online so why keep doing it? There’s a famous quote that goes: The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Let’s break out of the asylum together!

Picture this, you decide to start chatting with someone who might think you are cute, (despite the self portrait camera phone picture) and the first way you present yourself to her is with something along the lines of “helo, r yu tokin 2mi?“ not only do you appear one of the dimmer bulbs in the light fixture, but you give her no reason to respond back and most likely she will block you because clearly the conversation is going no where fast. Why not try an actual conversation starter, something that gives her an opening to chat and actually starts a dialogue.

I may be old school in my thinking but conversing should not be a dying art. In fact conversing via text or message can be challenging and fun, like an awesome puzzle where you come off sounding really smart and witty. Texting gives you the chance to edit what you are saying before you actually say it—you don’t have that opportunity in real life so take advantage of it. Try commenting on her photo, or mentioning something cool you have done, or even just saying hi and letting the conversation unfold. Here’s a test for you, go ahead and try your line and then try one of these:

Let’s chat and see where it goes.

You look like you might be interested in some stimulating conversation.

Hi, you’re cute!

See which one gets a positive response.

Whistling whether offline or on only highlights how awkward and unimaginative you are, and maybe speaks to a lack of social grace…and what girl wants that?

St. Patrick’s Day Fun Facts

Lucky Leprechaun Visits Skout HQ

It’s St. Patrick’s Day on Sunday, and to get in the spirit Skout HQ had a visit from the Lucky Leprechaun this morning. Even if you’re not seeing real live Leprechauns you can still spread some luck with a green themed virtual gift. Take it one step further and personalize it with your favorite St. Paddy’s Day fact to make your gift stand out.  To help you in both areas, we’ve got gifts ready to send in the Skout store and green themed trivia below. So kick off the celebration and get you in the spirit, with these “lucky” facts about St. Patrick’s Day!

  • The very first St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in Boston in 1737, not in Ireland.
  • There are over 100 St. Patrick’s Day Parades in the US
  • Montreal holds the record for Canada’s longest running parade, which debuted in 1824
  • Legend holds that each leaf of a clover has a special meaning: the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third is for love and the fourth is for luck-which is where the lucky four leaf clover comes from
  • Over 94 million people will wear green on St. Patrick’s Day
  • Wearing green, legend says, makes you invisible to Leprechauns and the pranks they might play
  • Leprechauns are always male (which begs the question, how does the Leprechaun population continue to grow)
  • St. Paddy’s (not Patty’s) Day is short for St. Patrick’s Day
  • 5.5 million pints of Guinness are consumed on any given day globally, but on St. Patrick’s day the number reaches 13 million pints

Different cities celebrate in different ways:

  • Seattle paints a green stripe down their roads
  • Chicago dyes their rivers green
  • Dublin, the Capital of Ireland, has a St. Patrick’s Day festival from March 15-19
  • Most pubs in Ireland are closed on St. Patrick’s Day

So have fun, be safe and don’t forget to wear your green!
