Summer Goal: Get a Pen Pal!

Weekend getaways, ultimate frisbee competitions, music festivals...summer is amazing, right?  With Memorial Day right around the corner, now is the time to start setting your summer goals, and this year why not add an online pen pal to the list?!

Back in the “olden days” people would be assigned a pen pal through an organization and then they’d write hand-written letters back and forth to learn about each other’s cultures and customs. Today, it’s so much easier to connect with new friends around the world! Use the SKOUT Travel feature to find someone to talk to anywhere in the world, immediately. You won't have to wait interminable weeks for a response from your pen pal, and of course, there is the added benefit of not having to look around for a postage stamp!

Don’t know where to begin? We’ll make it easy for you… Our team combed through data to uncover the friendliest cities around the world. Take a look at the map below. In the past month, Skouters in these cities have made the most connections. So go ahead, reach out and strike up a conversation. Who knows, maybe you’ll meet someone who will be a friend for life!

Get a summer pen pal? Check that one off the list!

Bike Month Celebrates Active Transportation!

At the beginning of the year, we asked Skouters what their goals were for 2016. 74% said they planned to exercise more this year, and 84% say they get a better workout when they exercise with a friend!

How is that exercise routine coming along for you? If you need some inspiration to mix up your workout routine, May is the perfect month to pick up bicycling!

Bike Month is primarily celebrated in the United States and Canada, but you can celebrate anywhere! During the month of May, we encourage you to take a weekend bike trek with friends or simply commute to work on your bike as opposed to driving or taking public transportation.

Check out this video from our co-worker biking around Santiago, Chile!

Promote biking this month by sharing the Mountain Bike Gift with your favorite Skouters! This gift can be found in the Bikes category of the Gift Store. They’re free for the rest of the month!

Celebrate Love and Life During Holi

Today, March 24, marks the celebration of Holi - the festival of colors. A spring festival, primarily celebrated in India, Nepal and other regions of the world with a significant population of Hindus, Holi celebrates the victory of good over evil and is a means for many to forgive and forget, meet new people and enjoy life. During Holi, the streets come alive with vivid colors as festival goers douse one another with powdered color pigments while singing and dancing. The celebration itself is a work of art and a magnificent display of love and appreciation for the human spirit.

Even if you’re not in a part of the world where Holi is celebrated, you can travel virtually to India and check out the festivities! Meet locals who partake in the festival and join the fun with them using SKOUT Travel.

Celebrate National Potato Chip Day With SKOUT!

SKOUT National Potato Chip Day Infographic
SKOUT National Potato Chip Day Infographic

National Potato Chip Day is on the 14th of March, and to celebrate, we surveyed more than 3,000 Skouters across the United States to find out what their favorite potato chip flavor reveals about them. Are you a Hot and Spicy chip lover or a BBQ chip lover? Find out what your chip preferences say about you!

96% of people say they like potato chips. Well, obviously people like potato chips… But, here’s the interesting part:

Lime/Citrus chip lovers have the most friends!

  • 42% of people who prefer lime/citrus chips have 5 or more close friends.

Hot & Spicy in the bag = hot & spicy in the bedroom.

  • People who prefer hot and spicy chip flavors (including jalapeno, cajun and other spicy varieties) are most likely (47%) to say they are adventurous in the bedroom.

Lime/Citrus chip lovers have the most sex!

  • 19% of people who prefer lime/citrus chips say they have sex every day!

Men are from Mars, and women and from Venus. Maybe so, but they have a couple of things in common when it comes to potato chips.

  • Males and females between the ages of 21 and 30 are fans of Hot and Spicy potato chips. And, according to the results above, this means they’re more adventurous in the bedroom!
  • Males and females over 50 prefer Plain chips. Perhaps the older you get, the more you think a potato should simply taste like a potato.

Some chip lovers hit the gym more than others…

  • Low/No Salt chip fans exercise most frequently, with 14% saying they do so every day.
  • Least likely to exercise at all are people who prefer Plain chips (28%) and Cheddar chips (26%).

Late-night snacking, with Jimmy Fallon. When asked which late-night comedian they would most want to share a bag of chips with, Jimmy Fallon gained the most votes.

  • 39% for Jimmy Fallon
  • 22% for Jimmy Kimmel
  • 12% for Stephen Colbert
  • 11% for Seth Meyers
  • 7% for Trevor Noah
  • 5% each for John Oliver and James Corden

Speaking of personalities, let’s pop open a bag and see where the political chips fall…

Hillary – she’s all that and a bag of chips! When asked which Democratic candidate they would most want to share a bag of potato chips with, people (of all political persuasions) weighed in:

  • 57% of people say they would prefer to share a bag of chips with Hillary Clinton.
  • 43% of people say they would prefer to share a bag of chips with Bernie Sanders.

On the Republican side, people most want to share their snack with Donald Trump.

  • When asked which Republican candidate they would most want to share a bag of potato chips with, Donald Trump got the most votes (33%) among people of all political persuasions. (As you can see below, when we conducted our survey the field of Republican contenders was wider than it is today.)

The Republican potato chip flavor poll results are in…

  • Donald Trump fans are most likely to prefer BBQ chips.
  • Marco Rubio fans are most likely to prefer Lime/Citrus chips.
  • Ted Cruz fans are most likely to prefer Cheddar chips.
  • John Kasich fans are most likely to prefer No/Low Salt chips.

In honor of National Potato Chip Day, SKOUT is partnering with our local SF-Marin Food Bank to help our local community fight hunger. With the help of donations and volunteers, the SF-Marin Food Bank provides food assistance to an average of 30,000 homes a week across the San Francisco and Marin counties.

Did you know that 1 in 4 kids in San Francisco and Marin counties is at risk of hunger? Last year, Skouters helped us raise enough money to serve 10,000 children with the SF-Marin Food Bank in honor of National Grilled Cheese Day.

This year, you can help us double our goal to try to serve 20,000 children! On National Potato Chip Day, SKOUT will donate to the SF-Marin Food Bank every time you give a Potato Chip Gift to another Skouter. Potato Chip Gifts can be found in the Potato Chip Day category of the Gift Store. If you’re not sure how to give a gift to a Skouter, click here to learn.

On March 3, SKOUT employees volunteered at the SF-Marin Food Bank to provide meals for families across both counties. In three hours, we packed 700 pounds of food. That’s the equivalent of 583 meals!

Interested in how you can help fight hunger?

  • In the Bay Area? The SF-Marin Food Bank is always looking for volunteers! Check out their volunteering opportunities.
  • Don’t have time to volunteer? You can always donate! For every $1 you donate, the SF-Marin Food Bank can donate $5 worth of food!
  • If you don’t live in the Bay Area, find a local food bank near you to learn how you can help out your local community.

SKOUT helps you meet new people around the world, but we also want to help you connect with your local community. Find a food bank near you to learn about opportunities for you to help and make a difference.

Celebrate National Potato Chip Day with SKOUT! Post a picture of you or you and your friends eating your favorite flavor of potato chips to the Buzz with the hashtag #SkoutChips. The Grand Prize winner will receive a SKOUT National Potato Chip Day T-shirt! Runners-up will get 500 points added to their account!

SKOUT Success: Joyce and Gilbert

For Joyce and Gilbert, the path to love ended happily when they used Skout’s Shake to Chat feature to meet new people. Both of them signed up for SKOUT to find a love interest and were members of the community for about a month each before finding each other.

Joyce is from the United States, and Gilbert is from Scotland, which is why they can only describe their connection via Shake to Chat as fate. “We know that it was divine intervention that had us both ‘shaking’ our phones at the same time 3,500 miles apart from each other,” says Joyce. “We hit it off right away and chatted for a few hours that first night. We talked every single day after that and immediately stopped chatting with others. We both knew we had ‘the one.’”

They chatted, emailed and Skyped for nine months before Gilbert flew to the United States to meet Joyce in person. A few months later, they got married! It’s been a year and a half since they met on SKOUT, and they’ve created a blog documenting their life together. Check it out!

Celebrate Your Online Friendships!

February 3rd marks the second annual International Online Friendship Day! We kicked off this momentous holiday last year and are psyched to be celebrating it again a second time around!

In this digital age, online friendships are flourishing, and SKOUT is super proud to play a part in helping people make new online friends all over the world! We surveyed more than 23,000 members of our global community to uncover some of the most recent trends in online friendship. Here’s what we found:

More than 75% of people have an online friend they’ve never met in real life.

  • 85% of people surveyed in Australia
  • 83% of people surveyed in Brazil
  • 81% of people surveyed in Mexico
  • 80% of people surveyed in the Philippines and Chile
  • 77% of people surveyed in Argentina
  • 76% of people surveyed in the United States

Miss Popularity award goes to...

  • The United States, United Kingdom, Brazil and Malaysia where over 35% of respondents have more than 10 online friends.

Meeting your online friend in real life sounds like a fabulous idea to…

  • 80% of English people surveyed
  • 81% of Canadians surveyed
  • 84% of Mexicans surveyed
  • 86% of Filipinos surveyed

Online friendships span the globe.

  • 69% of Malaysian and Mexican people surveyed say they have an online friend who lives in a different country
  • 79% of Vietnamese and Costa Rican people surveyed say they have an online friend who lives in a different country
  • 83% of Filipinos surveyed say they have an online friend who lives in a different country

There you have it. Online friendships are increasingly becoming a thing. Even the experts agree!

“Over the past decade, dramatic changes have taken place in the way we live, work and communicate but the need for friendship remains unchanged and essential to our well being,” said psychologist Irene S. Levine, PhD, producer of The Friendship Blog, a popular advice blog that helps people better navigate the murky rules of making and keeping friends. “Online friendships can complement ‘in real life’ ones, providing many of the same vital benefits, such as social support and feelings of connectedness.”

We couldn’t agree more! Whether you’re the newbie in town looking to make new friendships or simply want new people to chat with, you can find genuine friends online.

We’d like to give a special shout-out to our Skouters who shared their success stories with us. Thank you for the stories and enthusiasm about your online friendships!

"I have met two of my best friends on SKOUT. As with all apps you are bound to meet one or two bad seeds, but SKOUT is the one app where meeting great people outweighs meeting bad people. If you are looking for someone local, or if you are looking for someone abroad, there's a little something for everyone." - Aaron, Virginia

"It was really a refreshing and unforgettable experience meeting nice people through SKOUT." - CJ, Philippines

“I thank SKOUT for giving me the opportunity to make friends with people all around the globe.” - Jhelum, India

“I’m from Pakistan and when I moved to New York, I was bored, alone and had no friends. When I started using SKOUT I made a lot of friends in New York and now I feel happy here!” - Aman, New York

“Back in 2014, one of my friends got me to join Skout, she said it was fun so I gave it a try. As soon as I got on I used the "Shake to Chat" feature. The third person I came in contact with was a guy named Matt from New Jersey. We talked for a while! It is now 2016 and I still keep in contact with Matt daily. We plan on meeting up over the summer. I never imagined SKOUT would bring me life long friendships and close, personal interactions with people. I love the app and will continue to use it to make new relationships. Thanks for the experience you have given us Skouters!” - Samantha, Canada

“I have made so many online friends but the best ones are Audrey from France and Manow from Thailand. I’m sure that I will meet them whenever I get a chance!” - Nishit, India

Back in October of 2014, David (SKOUT ID: davidrf87) joined SKOUT to improve his English skills and meet new people. He used SKOUT Travel to check out the scene in Tokyo and met Yoshimi! They hit it off right away and soon developed an online friendship where they were chatting every day.

Sparks flew and their friendship soon grew into a romantic relationship. Almost a year into their online relationship, David traveled from his home country, Spain, to Tokyo to meet Yoshimi in person.

After spending two months of quality time together in Tokyo, David and Yoshimi got engaged.

“It was the best experience,” boasts David. “Thanks to SKOUT, I have met my future wife!”

Skouter Lady Toro (SKOUT ID: ladytoro1) has been making friends on SKOUT for three years. In July 2015, she noticed River (SKOUT ID: river1175) on the Buzz of a mutual friend. “Her sense of humor was spot on, and I knew immediately she was a cool chick,” remembers Lady Toro. River sent Lady Toro a private message, and they clicked right away! “Same sassy and snarky sense of humor,” says Lady Toro.

Lady Toro lives in Amsterdam, and River is thousands of mile away in North Carolina, but they don’t let the time difference get in the way of their friendship. They even plan to meet in person this year!

“She cracks me up so often! We can talk for hours sometimes (and totally forget about the time difference, as it's usually halfway through the night for me). We've been talking about meeting up at some stage this year. I'm not sure yet who goes where, but I'm positive we will meet in person and have a great time together. I have a lot of online friends but never had a bestie like her; she rocks!”

SKOUT Success: Lucas

When 24-year-old Lucas (SkoutID: flightattendant91) joined Skout a year and a half ago, he was excited to chat with people all over the world and learn about their cultures. Lucas, who is from Brazil and recently moved from Brasilia to Curitiba, was also looking forward to becoming fluent in English and practicing the German he’d studied for years.

Lucas decided to take his interests in other cultures offline, and this past summer he traveled to three different countries, where he met Skouters in person.

Lucas had been saving for this big trip for three years, but he knew it was time to actually plan it when he’d become close with some people he’d met on Skout.

“I talk to them every single day!” Lucas has said about some of his Skout friends.

After all that chatting, planning and saving, this summer Lucas traveled to Holland, Germany and Russia.

He spent a few weeks in Holland before he headed to Germany where he met up with Dmitri. After spending eight days in Germany seeing the sights, he went to St. Petersburg, Russia. In St. Petersburg, he met up with his best friend Irina who showed him her favorite spot in the city, Peterhof Park. Ten days later he went to Moscow. There he met up with Masha and Anastacia who showed him the Red Square and the Kremlin. All in all, a pretty awesome trip!

“Through Skout I've met people that have changed part of my life, how I think and see things, and also some people that I will carry forever in my heart.”

Have you met a friend on Skout? Please tell us at If we share your tale on the Skout Blog, we will deposit 500 Points in your Skout account!
